The first vehicle to be driven by a petrol engine, however, was the three-wheeled Motorwagen built by Karl-Friedrich Benz in 1885. It had a single-cylinder, four-stroke engine and could travel at speeds up to ten miles an hour (16 km/h). Benz built two of these cars, one of which is preserved in running order at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany.

Karl Benz (aka Carl Benz)
he himself wrote different surnames.

In 1885, German mechanical engineer

Karl Benz designed and built the world's first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine.

On January 29, 1886, Benz received the first patent (DRP No. 37435) for a gas-fueled car. It was a three-wheeler; Benz built his first four-wheeled car in 1891. Benz & Company, the company started by the inventor, became the world's largest manufacturer of automobiles by 1900.

Karl Friedrich Benz was born in 1844 in Baden Muehlburg, Germany (now part of Karlsruhe).

He was the son of an engine driver. (locomotives)

Benz attended the Karlsruhe grammar school and later the Karlsruhe Polytechnic University. In 1871,

He founded his first company with partner August Ritter, the "Iron Foundry and Machine Shop" a supplier of building materials.

Benz began his work on a two-stroke engine, in hopes of finding a new income. He received his first patent in 1879. In 1883, he founded Benz & Company to produce industrial engines in Mannheim, Germany.

He then began designing a "motor carriage", with a four-stroke engine
(based on Nicolaus Otto's patent).

Benz designed his engine (958cc, 0.75hp) and the body for the three-wheel vehicle with an electric ignition, differential gears, and water-cooling.

On January 29, 1886, he was granted a patent for his gas-fueled automobile (DRP 37435) and in July, he began selling his automobile to the public.

Carl Benz Patent Motorwagen 1886

The vehicle was awarded the German patent, number 37435, which Carl Benz applied for on January 29, 1886. Following official procedures, the date of the application became the patent date for the invention once the patent was granted, which occurred in November of that year.

Although Bertha Benz financed the developing process,

and she to modern standards is to be seen as owner of the patent-rights,

as a married woman she wasn't allowed to apply for the patent. At that time married women in the region the Benz-family lived, by law were taken away the juridical power to act.

The very first car, auto, automobile
[Daimler -] Benz 1886 by Beast 1, on Flickr

Karl Benz was born Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant, in Karlsruhe, Baden, which is part of modern Germany, to Josephine Vaillant and a locomotive driver, Johann George Benz, whom she married a few months later.

When he was two years old, his father was killed in a railway accident, and his name was changed to Karl Friedrich Benz in remembrance of his father.

Karl Friedrich Benz, sometimes spelled as Carl, (November 25, 1844, Karlsruhe, – April 4, 1929, Ladenburg, Germany) was a German engine designer and automobile engineer, generally regarded as the inventor of the gasoline-powered automobile and pioneering founder of the automobile manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz

Other German contemporaries, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach working as partners, also worked on similar types of inventions, without knowledge of the work of the other, but Benz patented his work first and, after that, patented all of the processes that made the internal combustion engine feasible for use in automobiles. In 1886 Benz was granted a patent for his first automobile.

In late 1885, Daimler and Maybach developed the first of their petrol engines.
They built the first motorcycle in 1885.

1885, but unknown to Maybach and Daimler, only sixty miles away in Mannheim, Karl Benz built the first true automobile using an integral design for a motorized vehicle with one of his own engines
. He was granted a patent for his motorwagen on January 29, 1886.

Karl Benz introduced the Velo in 1894, becoming the
first production automobile.
